Street Cleansing for Waveney District Council

All areas are cleansed to the DEFRA 2006 Code of Practice on Litter. With the exception of the shopping areas and town centres, all road channels are mechanically swept every 7 weeks. In the case of obstructed access e.g. due to permanently parked cars, roads are manually swept and reasonable attempts made to gain access to the whole road by repeat visits, advertising cleaning visits, leaflet drops etc.

Approximately 1500 bins are provided at various sites throughout the District for the disposal of litter and working with several Parish/Town Councils 70 bins for dog fouling. Bins are emptied at frequencies according to needs and usage such that the cleanliness of the area in which they are sited remains compliant with the EPA Code of Practice and waste is not left in a bin long enough for it to pose any health hazard or other public nuisance.

In addition to 2 Multi Storey Car parks that are cleaned on a daily basis we also clean approximately 23 standard car parks on a daily basis.

Graffiti and flyposting is removed from buildings and structures the Council is responsible for. Similarly, flytipping is to be promptly removed within 24 hours of first report from all highways and other locations the Council is responsible for.

In addition to the main scheduled duties the Street Cleansing Team also carry out special events cleaning including the Lowestoft air show, various charity and music events and Carnivals.  We also carry out private works including Mechanical Sweeping and garden clearances.

A 24hour 7day a week call out service is provided to react to emergencies like RTA’s, Oil/Diesel spills, needles & Flytipping.

• The majority of staff are NVQ trained

• We encourage recycling by supplying duel purpose litter/recycling bins in all of our High Streets and promenades
